Abstract -- To understand if post-graduate year one program has adopted disaster medicine, we reviewed the
details of 2004 PGY1 program and analyzed the contents as follows. Twenty-eight PGY1
participants from a university teaching hospital were enrolled to attend pre- and post-test. The associations
between the categories of PGY1 program and disaster medicine were determined by the consensus
of three independent experts. The so-called social medicine, one of the three major parts, included
biopsychosocial model (BPS), community-orientated primary care (COPC), and integrated
delivery system (IDS). The categories, subcategories or practice requirements were based upon these
guidelines. There were overall 52 practice requirements. Eleven of them (21%, 11/52) were be
significantly associated with disaster medicine. In addition, the pre-tests and post-tests concerning
disaster medicine were performed for 28 participants that attended the PGY1 course. There was no
significant improvement in understanding of disaster medicine (the average score
56+6 vs. 63+9, P=NS). In conclusion, current PGY1 program in Taiwan had limited role in education of disaster medicine. It suggests that there should be modification or improvements in such a field in the future.
